What is Artistic Swimming?

Artistic swimming is a versatile and fascinating sport that combines elements of swimming, acrobatics and dance.

Artistic swimming combines team spirit, endurance, strength and flexibility with an artistic component. In a free program, swimmers tell a story through artistic expression and musicality.

What do athletes learn from this sport? As a team sport, artistic swimming encourages solidarity and fair play; as an acrobatic sport, it fosters mastery of the body and motor skills; and as an artistic sport, it develops creativity and self-confidence.

Our club was a pioneer in the professionalisation of artistic swimming. Honorary member in memoriam Sisto Salera and long-standing honorary member Steffi Haeberli played a pioneering role in the 1960s. Their pioneering efforts led to the development of the first competition rules, which were introduced at the Swiss Championships in 1972 and later adopted by FINA (now World Aquatics).
